Acne Myths vs Truth: What’s Really Causing Your Breakouts?
If you’re struggling with acne, you may feel like you’ve tried everything, but despite your best efforts, your skin still isn’t improving.
Many people with acne are unknowingly following outdated myths that can actually make breakouts worse.
In this blog, I’m debunking the most common acne myths and sharing the real truth, so you can finally start seeing results.
Myth 1: Acne Is Caused by Dirty Skin
Truth: Acne is not caused by poor hygiene, in fact the total opposite applies here.
Over cleansing damages your skin barrier, leading to irritation, dehydration, and increased oil production, triggering more breakouts.
The key is gentle cleansing twice daily with the right products for your skin type.
Myth 2: Only Teenagers Get Acne
Truth: Adult acne is extremely common.
Hormones, stress, lifestyle, diet and skincare habits all play a role, especially in adult women.
Many of my clients at Selina Caroline Skin experience adult acne, I myself (at 29) struggled with hormonal acne, you’re not alone!
Myth 3: If You Have Oily Skin, You Don’t Need Moisturiser
Truth: All skin types need moisturiser, including oily and acne prone skin.
When you skip moisturiser, your skin becomes dehydrated and responds by producing more oil. This creates the perfect environment for more breakouts.
Stick with a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser to help regulate oil and protect your skin barrier.
Myth 4: Make Up Causes Acne
Truth: Makeup doesn’t cause acne, poor removal does.
Make sure you’re using non-comedogenic makeup if you’re acne prone, and remove it properly every evening.
Sleeping in makeup, using dirty brushes, or layering heavy products can clog pores and cause breakouts.
Myth 5: The Sun Clears Acne
Truth: The sun worsens acne long term.
Although the sun can temporarily dry spots, it also:
Increases oil production
Weakens the skin barrier
Darkens acne marks
Causes inflammation
Overtime, this leads to more breakouts and longer lasting pigmentation. Whilst it’s important to enjoy the sun, daily SPF is a non-negotiable for acne prone skin.
Myth 6: Popping Spots Makes Them Go Away Faster
Truth: Picking causes scarring and pigmentation.
Squeezing spots pushes bacteria deeper into the skin, increasing inflammation and slowing healing. It also increases the risks of developing post acne pigmentation and permanent scarring.
Myth 7: Expensive Products Are Always Better
Truth: Price does not equal results.
What matters is:
Correct ingredients
Suitable formulations
Consistency
Personalised routines
Many affordable products work brilliantly, when used correctly.
Skincare should always be tailored to your skin.
Myth 8: Diet Has Nothing To Do With Acne
Truth: Certain foods can trigger breakouts
While diet isn’t always the sole cause, certain foods (like high sugar or diary for some people) can trigger or worsen breakouts.
Skin health is influenced by both internal and external factors.
