Anti-Acne Tips: Gym Edition | How To Prevent Breakouts During Workouts

If you’re struggling with acne-prone skin, your workouts may be contributing to congestion and breakouts more than you realise. Sweat, heat and bacteria can all trigger inflammation, especially if your skin barrier is already compromised.

At Selina Caroline Skin, we work with many clients experiencing gym-related acne, which is typically found around the forehead, jawline, chest and back.

The good news is that a few simple changes to your workout and post-gym skincare routine can make a huge difference to your skin.

Does Exercise Trigger Acne?

Absolutely not! In fact, regular exercise can actually help improve acne by increasing blood circulation, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin for a healthier complexion.

However, sweat, excess oil, bacteria and friction can create the perfect environment for breakouts to develop, especially if the skin isn’t cared for properly before and after workouts.

If you regularly notice breakouts appearing after a workout, these anti-acne habits can help keep your skin clearer, calmer and healthier.

1. Avoid Touching Your Face During Workouts

Gym equipment, phones, headphones and your hands can transfer bacteria, sweat and oil directly onto the skin. Constantly touching your face during workouts can increase the risk of clogged pores and inflamed breakouts.

Try to:

  • Wipe down gym equipment before use

  • Clean your phone regularly

  • Avoid resting your hands on your face

  • Use a clean towel during workouts

This is especially important for acne-prone and sensitive skin types.

2. Wear Minimal Makeup to the Gym

Heavy makeup mixed with sweat and oil can trap bacteria and block pores, leading to congestion and breakouts.

For gym sessions, opt for:

  • Lightweight, non-comedogenic SPF

  • Tinted skincare instead of full coverage foundation

  • Breathable, acne-safe products

Allowing your skin to breathe while exercising can help reduce irritation and post-workout breakouts.

3. Be Mindful of Protein Powders and Supplements

Some gym supplements and workout shakes may contribute to acne breakouts in certain individuals, particularly if you are acne prone. Whey protein, in particular, has been linked to increased breakouts for some people due to its potential effect on hormones and oil production.

High doses of biotin supplements may also trigger congestion or worsen acne in some cases.

This doesn’t mean everyone will breakout from these products, but if your acne has worsened since starting new supplements, it may be worth reviewing what you are taking.

4. Avoid Over Cleansing the Skin

Over cleansing is a common mistake people make, you should only be cleansing twice a day maximum. Opt for a hypochlorous acid spray after workouts, to help control bacteria and calm the skin without causing dryness or irritation

5. Keep Hair Away From the Face

Hair products, oils and sweat can transfer onto the skin during exercise, especially around the forehead, temples and jawline.

To help prevent acne:

  • Tie your hair back during workouts

  • Avoid heavy styling products before the gym

  • Wash sweaty hair regularly

6. Change Out of Sweaty Clothes Quickly

Leaving sweaty gym clothes on for too long can trap heat, bacteria and moisture against the skin. This can contribute to body acne, particularly on the chest, shoulders and back.

7. Avoid Exfoliating Acids Immediately After Exercise

Post workout skin is already more reactive. Using strong exfoliating acids immediately after can increase irritation, redness and inflammation.

Instead:

  • Focus on hydration and skin barrier repair after workouts

  • Use exfoliating acids on rest days or evenings when skin is calm

  • Avoid over-exfoliating acne-prone skin

8. Apply Calming and Barrier Repair Products

After a workout, apply products that help reduce inflammation, support healing and strengthen the skin barrier.
