Everything You Need To Know About Microneedling
Microneedling is known for delivering impressive results for a range of different skin concerns, but what exactly is Microneedling?
In this blog I’m going to break it all down for you, how it works, the benefits, what your appointment will look like, as well as any aftercare advice.
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a professional skin treatment that uses tiny, sterilised needles to create micro-wounds on the skin. These controlled micro-wounds triggers the skins natural healing response which encourages it to produce collagen and elastin.
Fun fact - Did you know that just one session of Microneedling can increase collagen production by up to 400% 😱 so for anyone looking for the perfect anti-ageing treatment, this one’s for you! This leads me onto the next question..
What are the benefits of Microneedling?
These are a few of the skin concerns it helps with:
Acne scarring
Fine lines and wrinkles
Pigmentation and sun damage
Large pores
Overall skin tone and texture
Stretch marks
It’s also ideal for anyone looking for ‘tighter’ skin.
What to expect at your appointment
At Selina Caroline Skin we always begin every appointment with a thorough consultation, we will discuss your client form with you and check your skin is appropriately prepped for the treatment. Please be advised you should not be using any active ingredients for at least 2 weeks before Microneedling. Once we’ve deemed your skin suitable for Microneedling, we will begin with the following:
Double cleanse.
Enzyme peel - this is a painless, zero downtime peel that effectively removes dead skin, significantly improving the results from any treatment.
Mesotherapy Cocktail - we infuse a unique mesotherapy cocktail in every session of Microneedling, depending on your specific concerns or desires. These cocktails are used to boost and enhance your results.
Microneedling - once we have chosen your preferred cocktail we then proceed with the Microneedling.
Face Mask - each face mask is carefully selected for your skin’s unique needs.
Cooling Therapy - enjoy 5 minutes of pure bliss. (Our favourite part and our clients would agree).
LED Light Therapy - switch off with 15 minutes under the Dermalux Flex MD, each wavelength is clinically proven to treat a range of skin concerns. The wavelength selected will be for your individual needs.
Finishing Products - soothing serums and hydrating products are applied to calm the skin and enhance results.
Aftercare Tips
To ensure you get the best results from your treatment, aftercare is essential:
Keep a simple skincare routine (cleanser, moisturiser and spf) active ingredients should only be used 4-5 days after treatment or when advised.
Wear SPF daily!
Avoid any sun exposure for 2 weeks post treatment.
Avoid makeup for a minimum of 3 days.
Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and intense exercise for a minimum of 72 hours.
All aftercare will be provided at the end of your treatment and can vary from person to person. We understand for those having Microneedling for the first time it can feel a little daunting, therefore ongoing support post treatment will always be provided.
How many sessions do you need?
While you’ll often see improvements after just one session, for optimal results or depending on your skin concerns, Microneedling works best as a course. This can vary anywhere between 3-6 treatments 4-6 weeks apart. This will be discussed in your appointment.
What does Microneedling feel like?
The answer to this really varies from person to person, some may find it more uncomfortable than others, but most say it feels like small scratches on the skin. Each treatment is tailored to you individually, so no need to worry we will ensure you’re as comfortable as possible!
Who isn’t suitable for Microneedling?
Whilst Microneedling is suitable for most skin types, we wouldn’t recommend the treatment if you:
Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Have active acne, eczema, rosacea or psoriasis.
Prone to keloid scarring.
Those on blood thinners or undergoing chemotherapy.
